Group of Students

For 10 years, Colorado Education Initiative (CEI) has been at the forefront of improvement, innovation, and change in Colorado’s public education system. We are a statewide nonprofit organization that invests time, expertise, and dollars in K-12 public education.

We are rooted in a vision of equitable outcomes for every kid that drives a strong bias for action focused on sustainable change to the system. Over the years, we’ve worked with educators as an inspired and supportive partner on the ground in over 150 urban, suburban, and rural school districts.

We are known as a visionary organization that fuses best practices with innovation, that is tuned into today’s school dynamic and always mindful of what the future demands.

Today, at a time when education policy is shifting power back to the states, CEI plays three important roles in Colorado.

Running Kid - student outcomes graphic

In 2013, CEI, the Colorado Department of Education and hundreds of teachers, workforce leaders and community members co-created this illustration known as the “Running Kid.” The aspirational student outcomes still drive our work today.

Over the next few years, we will center our work around three areas we call Big Bets, chosen for the potential they have to transform the system.

High School Redesign: CEI will help Colorado’s high schools design learning environments that offer relevant and rigorous experiences, and attend to students’ academic and social-emotional needs, to prepare all students for postsecondary learning, work, and life.

Competency-Based/Personalized Learning: CEI is intensifying our efforts to help districts build systems where students advance based on demonstrated readiness and educators tailor learning for each student’s strengths, needs, and interests.3 Big Bets

SpaceLab: This is CEI’s “test kitchen” for shorter term innovation projects allowing us to uncover emerging needs and opportunities in the field while simultaneously building partner readiness to innovate.
