Closing the Opportunity Gap
More than half of the students at Godsman Elementary in Denver are English language learners and the majority qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Most Godsman parents don’t have the means to enroll their students in extra-curricular activities like sports, art, or yoga. When the school implemented an expanded learning time model, students were thrilled to have the opportunity to take karate, music, acting, and other classes. The school partnered with the Boys & Girls Club to offer many of these options. Godsman also increased learning time in literacy and math and expanded wrap-around services for families. The result has been a rise in student achievement and a sharp decline in the number of students needing intensive classroom intervention.
