Expanding Learning Time for the Whole Child
Denison Montessori’s learning model is based on a three-hour period of individualized learning for every student. Now, almost all students have a full three hours of individual learning time and teachers receive an hour of daily planning time. Initially — because of competing demands on time — many students did not get the full three hours. By working with community partners, the school was able to expand the day by 45 minutes and stay within the bounds of educators’ contracts. Students choose from enrichment activities including tennis, yoga, chess, drama, and gardening. The changes have been highly popular with students, teachers, and parents.
